Provincial legislation
The Provincial Council draws up the budget for the Province and deals with the many requests for subsidies. It also determines the Provincial bye-laws, which cover everything from advertising to groundwater. The Provincial Council is also responsible for various coordinating and planning tasks and establishes regulations in this respect which apply to the Province as a whole or to particular areas within the Province, for instance the provincial road network, town and country planning, relocation schemes for mobilehome dwellers, educational institutions and public health services. The Provincial Council also supervises public utility companies such as MEGA Limburg [energy] and Waterleidingmij. [water], which are owned by the Province and serve a large portion of its population.
In addition, every four years the members of the Provincial Council elect representatives to the upper house of the national parliament. Equally important is the responsibility borne by the Council to supervise the day-to-day administrative duties of the Provincial Executive.
