The seat of government of the Province of limburg

Limburg's Provincial Government Building, known officially as the Gouvernement, was constructed in the period from March 1983 to October 1985. Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands officiated at the opening ceremony on Tuesday 22 April 1986. The complex, which accommodates the Provincial Government and civil service, is located on the banks of the river Meuse, to the south of J.F. Kennedy Bridge. It stands in a part of Maastricht known as ‘Randwyck’, the name of an eighteenth century bastion that formed part of Maastricht's network of fortifications. Randwyck is now the focal point for the city's modern‑day aspirations. In addition to the Provincial Government Building, it is also the location for office complexes (including those belonging to express carrier DHL, Mercedes-Benz and Vodafone), as well as part of Maastricht University, the University Hospital, Maastricht School of Management and the Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre (MECC). An adjoining area, known as "Ceramique", houses the Province's Bonnefanten Museum of ancient and contemporary art.
